Camarillo, CA and Rockledge, FL (December 13, 2021) ā Saalex Corporationās Expendable Launch Vehicle Integrated Support 3 (ELVIS 3) team is helping NASA and its partners prepare for the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), designed to succeed the Hubble Space Telescope as NASAās top space observatory. With a diameter of more than 21 feet, the JWST will become the largest telescope mirror ever launched into orbit.
The launch is scheduled for December 22, 2021, from the European Space Agencyās Guiana Space Center in South America. The mission is an international collaboration that also includes ESA (European Space Agency) and the Canadian Space Agency.
It is anticipated that the JWST will uncover previously unknown information about the universe’s very beginnings. It will allow for a diverse range of astronomical and cosmological studies, including the observation of some of the universe’s most distant events and objects, such as the birth of the earliest galaxies, and the precise atmospheric analysis of possibly habitable planets.
The ELVIS 3 team from Saalex is providing the JWST team with engineering, programmatic and technical support for the liftoff. This is the sixth space mission that ELVIS 3 has supported in 2021.
āThis mission is a bit more challenging than the typical support we provide our launch customers, as it will take place in South America,ā said Travis Mack, president and CEO, Saalex. āDespite that extra challenge, the Saalex ELVIS 3 team has performed flawlessly, and looks forward to a successful launch just before Christmas. After that, we can watch with pride as the Webb observatory makes groundbreaking discoveries about space, knowing we played an integral role in the mission. It is humbling to say the least.ā
