Camarillo, CA and Rockledge, FL (November 16, 2021) – Saalex Corporation’s launch team has been extremely busy this week, providing critical launch and flight support for two SpaceX missions. The Crew-2 Dragon module safely splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico Tuesday (November 9, 2021), ending the 199-day Crew-2 mission to the International Space Station. Last night, Saalex’s Expendable Launch Vehicle Integrated Support 3 (ELVIS 3) team also assisted with the launch of the Crew-3 module, from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
The ELVIS 3 team supported weather briefings, mission management team meetings and readiness reviews in preparation for last night’s launch. The support required for the missions was more involved than typical operations, as NASA and SpaceX decided to bring the Crew-2 mission home before launching the Crew-3. This required the teams to perform an unusual switch from a direct to an indirect ‘handover’, allowing the two mission milestones to occur so close to one another.
The Crew-3 and Crew-2 missions were the latest space flights that the ELVIS 3 team has supported this year, having assisted the Landsat 9 launch in September, and an April SpaceX mission to the International Space Station. The ELVIS 3 team provided engineering, programmatic and technical support for each of the launches.
“The Saalex team has shown it can support a very ambitious launch schedule, which is critical to maintain our nation’s leadership in the space domain,” said Travis Mack, president and CEO, Saalex. “As the number of commercial launch companies continues to grow, they can be confident that the ELVIS 3 team will be there to support their missions, no matter how busy the launch schedules get.”
